JBEI conducts its activities as a single operating organization—composed of national labs, universities, and industry partners—uniting scientific, operational, and administrative efforts to accomplish the goals and objectives of JBEI. LBNL is spearheading this effort. The management structure, incorporating regular reviews, has enabled JBEI scientists and students to plan and execute milestone-driven research that emphasizes integration, flexibility, and operating efficiencies. Bold approaches are encouraged with an emphasis on accelerating scientific research on several fronts so that less successful approaches can be identified early and effort redirected toward the most promising lines of research. The executive and advisory components of this organizational structure focus on innovation and assisting the research effort by quickly resolving roadblocks and fine-tuning the organization’s energies, providing the greatest benefit to the country’s energy security and the DOE mission.
