Industry
A cornerstone of the JBEI mission is the transfer of its scientific advances into commercially viable technologies, methods and tools. Partnering with private industry helps us achieve this goal by illuminating commercial challenges that might not be apparent from the lab bench. Sponsoring research enables companies to leverage JBEI's multidisciplinary talent and technology to provide research that might not be possible otherwise, or might be too costly and time consuming to undertake internally. Other options include licensing inventions, placing a company researcher at JBEI for training or collaborative research through our Visiting Industry Scholars program; exchanging and transferring research materials, joining our Technological - Economic Modeling Consortium; or sponsoring a post-doctoral researcher. Informal collaborations are also welcomed. The JBEI institutional partners have a unique arrangement that allows Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory to manage all JBEI collaborations and intellectual property. Our Director of Commercialization is a single point of contact who will work with you to determine and execute the steps necessary for a successful partnership.
Another mechanism through which JBEI engages with industry is the JBEI Industry Advisory Committee. The committee is comprised of leading companies involved with one or more aspects of the biofuels industry. Committee members inform JBEI researchers about technological, infrastructure and scale-up challenges. Advisory committee activities include interactive meetings and poster sessions, to which all JBEI researchers are invited.
